During his three-day visit to Delhi, Uddhav Thackeray met with Sunita Kejriwal.
New Delhi [India], August 8 : Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray visited Sunita Kejriwal, wife of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, at her residence in Delhi on Thursday as part of his three-day visit to the national capital. He was accompanied by his son and party MLA Aaditya Thackeray and party leader Sanjay Raut. AAP MPs Sanjay Singh and Raghav Chadha were also present during the visit.
MP Sanjay Singh stated that Thackeray extended his support to Sunita Kejriwal and the Delhi Chief Minister's parents. He mentioned that the meeting discussed the unprecedented nature of Arvind Kejriwal's arrest, which occurred without a copy of the order, and the subsequent CBI case that led to his detention.
Singh added, "Through ED-CBI, they (the government) want to suppress our voice. But we will all fight this government together. Everyone is standing with each other in this. Uddhav ji gave this assurance to Sunita Kejriwal and her family."
The Delhi High Court had recently dismissed Arvind Kejriwal's plea challenging his arrest in the CBI case related to the Excise Policy matter. The court noted that Kejriwal's arrest could not be deemed unjustifiable. The ED has requested a short adjournment to address its plea for bail cancellation, with the court's inquiry set to resume on September 5, 2024.
Earlier on Wednesday, Thackeray also met Congress national president Mallikarjun Kharge and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi in Delhi, in preparation for Maharashtra's upcoming assembly elections.
Thackeray's visit to Delhi is part of his effort to engage with major opposition leaders ahead of the Maharashtra state assembly elections, expected later this year. The current government's term ends in 2024, but the Election Commission has yet to announce specific election dates.
In the recent Lok Sabha elections, the ruling BJP saw a decrease in seats in Maharashtra, winning only nine seats compared to 23 in 2019, with a vote share of 26.18%. The Congress improved its position slightly, securing 13 seats. The Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) won nine seats, while the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) secured one seat, totaling 17 seats for the Maha Yuti alliance.
