Himachal Pradesh: Schools and colleges in Karsog have been closed due to heavy rainfall

Mandi (Himachal Pradesh) [India], August 7 (ANI): Due to ongoing heavy rainfall, authorities in Himachal Pradesh's Karsog Sub-Division have announced the closure of all schools, colleges, anganwadi centers, and vocational institutes on Wednesday.

The Sub-Divisional Magistrate of Karsog issued an order stating, "Continuous rainfall since last night has led to road blockages and frequent landslides. With heavy rainfall expected throughout August 7, 2024, the safety of staff, students, and trainees cannot be guaranteed. Therefore, movement should be restricted."

Under Section 34 of the Disaster Management Act, 2005, the order mandates that all government and private educational institutions, including anganwadi and vocational centers, remain closed to ensure the safety of students and staff. School and college heads are required to enforce this order as a matter of public safety.

This decision follows an orange alert issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), which forecasts continued light to moderate rainfall in the state.

According to the State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA), 85 roads, including two National Highways (NH), have been closed due to landslides and excessive rain. Additionally, 116 electricity supply schemes and 65 water supply schemes have been disrupted.

A severe cloudburst occurred in the Lahaul and Spiti districts on August 1, exacerbating the situation. As rain persists in Shimla and other parts of Himachal Pradesh, authorities advise residents and tourists to exercise caution and stay informed through weather advisories.
