Mumbai: The state government on Tuesday issued orders appointing senior IPS officer Sadanand Date as the new Director General of Police (DGP). A 1990-batch officer, Date is all set to assume charge at a time when the state is grappling with law and order challenges, rising cybercrime, and increasing public scrutiny of policing.
Date, best known for his role during the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks, when he was serving as Additional Commissioner of Police (Central Region), was known to be critically injured after being shot by terrorists at Cama Hospital. He later recovered and returned to duty, earning national recognition for his bravery.
During his career, Date has held several key positions in Maharashtra, including Mumbai Police Commissioner and Chief of the Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS). He has handled multiple sensitive investigations and is known for his disciplined, no-nonsense approach to policing.
At the national level, Date served as Director General of the National Investigation Agency (NIA), where he oversaw major terror-related probes and worked to strengthen coordination between central and state investigating agencies.
